[18:10]<Quantos> Hi guys
[18:10]<BC_Programmer> Lot of nerve showing up around here after the weasels-in-skirts incident
[18:10] * BC_Programmer is now known as BC_Programming
[18:10] * ChanServ sets mode: +a
[18:10] * ChanServ sets mode: +o BC_Programming
[18:11]<Quantos> Weasels in skirts?
[18:11]<Quantos> Oh I remember that now I think
[18:11]<Quantos> :D
[18:11]<Quantos> I've been away a few days, got stuck in the crossfire for mibbits shun filter, whatever that is
[18:11]<@BC_Programming> considering I Just made it up right now erm
[18:12]<Quantos> OH did you?
[18:12]<Quantos> I remember giving someone a rough time about kilts
[18:12]<@BC_Programming> hah
[18:12]<@BC_Programming> ok that works
[18:12]<Quantos> And I don't think it was Cam, oddly enough
[18:12]<@BC_Programming> yeah that is totally what I was referencing! There
[18:12]<Quantos> LOL
[18:12]<Quantos> So how's things going?
[18:13]<@BC_Programming> as well as can be expected I suppose
[18:18]<Quantos> And the new job is still moving smoothly?
[18:18]<@BC_Programming> yeah
[18:18]<@BC_Programming> wish I got more sleep though
[18:18]<Quantos> Yeah, that's a common lament
[18:19]<@BC_Programming> I don't have to worry about commute time but the downside is that I can't 'go home' in a way
[18:19]<Quantos> Oh, you're working at home now?
[18:19]<@BC_Programming> I've been since I started
[18:20]<Quantos> I just assumed you were going to the office
[18:20]<@BC_Programming> I think I've been there 3 times total lol
[18:20]<Quantos> Wait a minute, have we had this conversation before?
[18:20]<@BC_Programming> possibly
[18:20]<Quantos> It seems.. .. familiar
[18:20]<Quantos> My memory is pure shit
[18:21]<@BC_Programming> At least I'll have a good bit of overtime on my next pay I suppose
[18:21]<Quantos> Oh they do cover you for OT?
[18:21]<@BC_Programming> yep it's hourly, OT is time and a half
[18:22]<Quantos> Good, so many places now want you to get raped without the lipstick
[18:22]<Quantos> Nice
[18:22]<Quantos> So you must be doing about $25/hour?
[18:22]<@BC_Programming> I worked two days over the holidays and still got paid more than I did working full time at Tim Hortons
[18:23]<Quantos> That's about what a third year apprentice makes, so it seems right
[18:23]<Quantos> No kidding
[18:23]<@BC_Programming> 18$/hr
[18:23]<Quantos> I feel sorry for the people that work there
[18:23]<Quantos> What? That's it?
[18:23]<Quantos> A first year apprentice makes that, and you've been to school
[18:23]<@BC_Programming> COL is super low here
[18:24]<@BC_Programming> I haven't been to school... I have only high school
[18:24]<Quantos> I thought you had some college
[18:24]<@BC_Programming> nope zero
[18:24]<Quantos> So you're fully self taught?
[18:24]<@BC_Programming> Yes
[18:24] * Quantos has new respect for the BC
[18:25]<@BC_Programming> All the other engineers/developers have a degree
[18:25]<Quantos> Wow, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to go about learning to learn Python
[18:25]<Quantos> I was sure that you had a degree too
[18:26]<@BC_Programming> I remember in the interview I was told that they usually ignore people who don't have degrees but that they looked at stuff like my website/blog and my stuff on github and they were impressed enough to move forward
[18:26]<Quantos> I kind of got my taste buds dampened - Cam showed me a snippet of Python code, and I could actually kind of make out some of the syntax
[18:27]<Quantos> Wow
[18:27]<Quantos> Now that's a compliment
[18:27]<Quantos> Are you on the same pay structure as the others?
[18:27]<@BC_Programming> dunno
[18:28]<Quantos> From the sounds of the company I think you might be
[18:28]<@BC_Programming> Except one other guy who was hired the same time as myself I'm pretty sure they make way more than me though
[18:28]<Quantos> I thought there was more money in programming than that
[18:28]<@BC_Programming> I mean I'd be annoyed if I worked here for 14 years and then we hired a new person who made as much as I did
[18:28]<Quantos> I wouldn't care if he was doing the same work
[18:29]<@BC_Programming> well we get raises yearly
[18:29]<Quantos> See in ironwork that's how it is, the new journeyman makes as much as the old journeyman, but he'd damn well better be able to do the same work as the old journeyman
[18:30]<@BC_Programming> I've inserted myself into everything it seems
[18:30]<Quantos> We get COL raises, it's part of our collective bargaining agreements
[18:30]<@BC_Programming> which only became clear as the WO's got rejected in testing heh
[18:31]<Quantos> Oh of course
[18:31]<@BC_Programming> or "I need to have a talk with the person who wrote Meter Reader, I'm checking the commit logs"
[18:31]<@BC_Programming> "
[18:31]<@BC_Programming> "well self, you have some explaining to do"
[18:31]<Quantos> LOL
[18:31] * Quantos can visualize you taking yourself to task
[18:32]<@BC_Programming> well that sort of happened yesterday but I knew I wrote it
[18:32]<@BC_Programming> though in my defense I had no idea how to use the weird server thing we use for compat with the old system
[18:32]<Quantos> hehehe
[18:32]<Quantos> You lost me
[18:33]<@BC_Programming> Basically old system is from the 80's, it had a special network protocol thing so that you could connect to it and do stuff like read/write data
[18:34]<Quantos> OH, and you have to figure out how to make it play nicely I assume
[18:35]<@BC_Programming> but it's networking is buggy garbage and the system crashes and dies repeatedly, so we've got a Windows Program that mimicks that server but actually deals with the data in a postgres database instead of 80's style ISAM files
[18:37]<Quantos> Hmm, sounds shitty, are they in the process of upgrading at all?
[18:37]<Quantos> Sorry bot
[18:38]<@BC_Programming> that is the upgrade basically
[18:39]<Quantos> Hmm, okay
[18:39]<@BC_Programming> it also reads/writes and keeps the actual THEOS server maintained with the data, the main thing is THEOS crashes constantly and the windows server program masks that
[18:39]<Quantos> It sounds like they really need to repair/replace/properly fix some servers
[18:39]<@BC_Programming> we want to get off of THEOS entirely of course but when customers have data going back over 10 years on the system it needs to be compatible
[18:40]<@BC_Programming> No the servers are software...
[18:40]<Quantos> They're all VM?
[18:40]<@BC_Programming> they have to be
[18:40]<@BC_Programming> the OS doesn't even support modern hardware
[18:40]<@BC_Programming> THEOS that is... piece of trash
[18:40]<Quantos> Oh wow, that is old
[18:41]<@BC_Programming> yepper
